The cervical spine is the seven vertebrae in your neck. It carries the weight of your head, provides most of your rotation, and surrounds the spinal cord on its way to the arms — which is why neck problems so often show up as shoulder or arm pain, numbness, or weakness in the hand.

Cervical Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament (OPLL)
A condition in which the posterior longitudinal ligament of the neck progressively ossifies, narrowing the spinal canal and placing the spinal cord at risk of injury.
Cervical Radiculopathy
A pinched or irritated nerve root in the neck that sends pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness down into the shoulder, arm, or hand.
Cervical Stenosis
Narrowing of the cervical spinal canal or nerve-root openings that can compress the spinal cord or nerve roots, causing arm pain, hand clumsiness, or balance problems.
Mechanical Neck Pain
Common neck pain and stiffness coming from muscles, joints, and discs in the neck, without a pinched nerve or spinal cord involvement.
Shoulder Pathology as a Cervical Mimic
A shoulder disorder (such as rotator cuff disease, impingement, or frozen shoulder) can produce arm pain that closely resembles a pinched nerve in the neck, making accurate diagnosis essential before any treatment is started.
